Taking our expertise East

Our ability to provide access to global markets is driving
our development in emerging economies.

The commodities market is as old as trade itself, but the surge in demand from the industrialising economies of Asia and a number of emerging markets is raising both its prices and its profile, and creating new opportunities for innovation for the market leaders. And Barclays Capital is one of them.

Our developments in Asia are strengthened by our alliance with the China Development Bank (CDB). In July 2007 we forged a strategic partnership with the CDB which will allow us to benefit from their extensive corporate relationships and CDB to benefit from our wide international experience. Commodities are central to this partnership, with China's demand for industrial raw materials set to rise to over $200 billion by 2011. We announced a Commodities Strategic Alliance in October 2007 and our teams are already working closely with their counterparts at CDB.

We’re applying our risk management and capital markets expertise both to traditional commodities trading, and new sectors of the market like carbon and renewables, where we’re one of the biggest players. Our ability to price, structure and execute transactions is helping over 1,000 clients manage their commodities risk, ranging from oil, mining and utility companies, to central banks and hedge funds.

With seven offices and 160 dedicated traders and researchers across the world, BarCap is one of the three leading commodities banks in the world, a position that’s been recognised by recent awards (Risk magazine, International Financing Review, Euromoney and The Banker).
